Six ways games use Street View
The same panoramas can power very different games. Knowing the type you enjoy makes it easier to choose.
-
Location guessing
You are dropped somewhere unknown, look for clues and pin your guess on a map. Closer guesses score more. GeoGuessr made this format famous.
-
Country recognition
A lighter version: you only need to name the country, not the exact spot. Good for building geography knowledge.
-
Free exploration
No score, just a random place in the world to wander through. Some players turn it into their own guessing game with friends.
-
Treasure hunting
You know where you are; the challenge is to explore the streets and find what is hidden there before time runs out.
-
Hide and seek
One player hides somewhere in the world and the others search Street View to work out where.
-
Party challenges
Group modes such as bingo cards of scenes to find, played together in a lobby.

A different way to use the streets
Treasure hunting in Street View
Most Street View games reward you for recognising a place. Huntaz rewards you for exploring it. Each location is a real place in Google Street View, with treasure chests hidden around it. You walk the streets, scan buildings, corners and pavements, and open every chest you can find.
In multiplayer hunts, teams play the same locations at the same time, and each team needs enough Huntaz Points at every location to stay in the race. The surviving team with the most points wins.
Street View or not? Games that use other imagery
Several games that appear in "Street View games" lists use different imagery. They are worth knowing about, but they play differently:
- City Guesser uses real walking and driving videos. You watch the street rather than move through it, then guess the city on a map.
- TimeGuessr uses historical photographs and asks where and when each was taken.
- Worldle shows only a country’s outline.
A note on Google
Street View is a Google product, but the games in this guide are made by independent developers. A game showing Street View imagery does not mean Google makes, sponsors or endorses it, and the same is true of Huntaz.
Which Street View game should you play?
-
Test how well you know the world
GeoGuessr, WorldGuessr or OpenGuessr.
-
Learn to recognise countries
Streetviewr, or the country modes in other guessers.
-

-
Just wander the world
MapCrunch.
-
Explore with a goal and a team
Huntaz treasure hunts.
-
More than geography
TimeGuessr, which adds the year (photos, not Street View).

Sources and how we checked
We checked each game's own website on 27 October 2026 for how it plays, what is free and what needs an account or payment. Games change their features and plans often, so check the official site before you rely on any detail here.
Geotastic and OpenGuessr build their pages in the browser with JavaScript, so we checked their official pages (help, donations, about and getting-started pages) as published and indexed rather than by loading the live app. Their details are the most likely to have changed.
