Kinds of online treasure hunt
-
Street View treasure hunts
Treasure is hidden in real places shown in Street View, and you explore the streets to find it before time runs out.
-
Street View scavenger hunts
Instead of one treasure, you search for a list of scenes, such as a red phone box or a mountain view, and tick them off.
-
Hide and seek
Another player is the treasure: they hide somewhere in the world and you search for clues to where they are.
-
Real-world geocaching
An app guides you to real containers hidden outdoors. The hunt starts online and finishes on foot.
-
Treasure-themed browser games
Casual pirate, adventure and hidden-object games on game portals. Fun, but set in invented worlds rather than real places.
-
Make your own hunt
Pick a place in Street View, describe what to find and challenge friends to reach it. No special game needed.
Virtual treasure hunts and geocaching: what is the difference?
Virtual treasure hunts are played entirely on screen. You explore real places through Street View, and the treasure exists only in the game. Huntaz, Geotastic’s Geobingo and Hide and Seek World all work this way, so you can play from home, on a train or at your desk.
Geocaching is a physical, outdoor activity. Real containers are hidden in real places, and you travel to them on foot with a phone or GPS device, then sign a paper logbook. We include it because many people looking for treasure hunts want exactly that, but it is not a game you play in a browser.

The best treasure hunting games set in real places
-
1. Huntaz
Our game: Street View treasure hunt
Huntaz is a treasure hunt played in real streets. Each hunt takes you to real locations in Google Street View with treasure chests hidden around them. Walk the streets, look closely at what is around you and open every chest you can find before the clock runs out. Each one adds Huntaz Points.
Hunt alone in a Quick Hunt, take on the Daily Hunt that every player gets the same day, or join a team in Scheduled Multiplayer and Sponsored Multiplayer hunts. Rewards are Huntaz Points and Huntaz Coins, which are in-game rewards with no cash value.
- Where you hunt
- Real places in Google Street View
- Free access
- Free to play with a free account
- Solo or team
- Both: Quick Hunt and Daily Hunt alone, team hunts with up to four players
- Platforms
- Web browser on desktop and mobile
Good for: a real treasure hunt you can play from anywhere, in a few minutes.
Worth knowing: it rewards sharp eyes and quick exploring rather than general knowledge.
-
2. Geotastic: Geobingo
Street View scavenger hunt
Geobingo is a mode of Geotastic, a free multiplayer geo quiz built around Google Street View. Each player gets a bingo card of scenes to find, and everyone searches Street View to fill their card first. It is closer to a scavenger hunt than a single treasure, and it works best with a group.
Its Geobingo page says hosting needs a free account, and guests can join a lobby without one.
- Where you hunt
- Google Street View
- Free access
- Free, with optional one-time supporter levels
- Solo or team
- Group lobbies
- Platforms
- Web browser
Good for: friends who like spotting details together.
Worth knowing: it is a party mode, best with several players.

3. Hide and Seek World
Street View hide and seek
Here the treasure is a person. One player hides on the world map and the others explore Street View, reading signs, buildings and landscape, to find where they are. Public games are free with ads, private 1v1 rooms are free, and paid memberships add bigger rooms.
- Where you hunt
- Street View
- Free access
- Free public games and 1v1 rooms
- Solo or team
- Multiplayer, plus daily and streak modes
- Platforms
- Web browser
Good for: a playful search game with friends.
Worth knowing: it plays more like location guessing than treasure hunting.

4. Geocaching
Physical, outdoor treasure hunt
Geocaching calls itself the world’s largest treasure hunt. You create a free account, find a geocache near you on the map, and use the Geocaching app or a GPS device to walk to it. When you find the container you sign its logbook, put it back and log your find online.
A free basic account covers basic geocaches and worldwide search. A paid Premium membership adds Premium-only caches, advanced search and offline geocaching.
- Where you hunt
- Outdoors, in the real world
- Free access
- Free basic account; paid Premium
- Solo or team
- Either; go alone or with family and friends
- Platforms
- Phone app or GPS device, plus the website
Good for: getting outside and finding real objects.
Worth knowing: you need to travel to each cache, so it is not something to play at your desk.

How a Huntaz treasure hunt works
A Huntaz hunt is simple to start and hard to master.
- Choose a hunt: Quick Hunt, Daily Hunt, Scheduled Multiplayer or Sponsored Multiplayer.
- Explore a real location in Google Street View, moving from one panorama to the next.
- Spot a chest and open it. Each chest adds Huntaz Points.
- Move on to the next location when the time is up, and keep your score climbing.
- Climb the leaderboard or, in team hunts, help your team finish on top.
Before you join a prize hunt
Some websites run online treasure hunts with real-money prizes, and some charge an entry fee. These vary widely. Before you pay or share personal details, check:
- who runs the hunt, and whether the company and its terms are easy to find;
- whether you have to pay to enter, and what happens to the money if the hunt is cancelled;
- how winners are chosen and paid, and whether past winners are named;
- whether entering is legal where you live.
What you can win in Huntaz
Huntaz prizes are in-game rewards: Huntaz Points and Huntaz Coins. Huntaz Coins have no cash value and cannot be withdrawn as money.

Sources and how we checked
We checked each game's own website on 27 October 2026 for how it plays, what is free and what needs an account or payment. Games change their features and plans often, so check the official site before you rely on any detail here.
Geotastic builds its pages in the browser with JavaScript, so we checked their official pages (help, donations and Geobingo pages) as published and indexed rather than by loading the live app. Its details are the most likely to have changed.
