Play your way around the world

Online Vacation Games: A New Way to Explore the World

Updated

Games have always been a way to visit places you cannot reach. What has changed is that many of them now take you to real places: real streets, real cities and real landscapes, explored from a browser. Some are relaxed and social, some test what you know about the world, and some give you a mission in a real city.

This guide sorts online vacation games by the kind of play they offer, explains how each works and what it costs to start, and helps you pick one for your mood, whether that is a calm evening with friends or a bit of friendly competition.

What counts as an online vacation game?

For this guide, an online vacation game is anything playful that takes you somewhere in the real world and lets you spend time there through a browser. That includes relaxed social experiences, where the “game” is exploring together and trying activities, and more structured games with a goal, a score or a winner.

We leave out big open-world video games set in fictional or rebuilt worlds. They can be wonderful, but they usually need buying, installing and a powerful device, and they are not real places. Our virtual travel games guide covers that distinction in more detail.

Four kinds of online vacation game

  • Social vacation experiences

Travel to a real city with a group, explore together and try shared activities. Relaxed and conversational.

  • Location guessing

You are dropped into a real scene and guess where in the world you are. Great for curious minds.

  • Treasure hunting in real places

Explore real streets with a mission, such as finding hidden chests before time runs out.

  • Map and geography quizzes

Flags, capitals and countries on a map. Quick rounds that sharpen your knowledge before a trip.

Online vacation games worth playing

Huntaz is ours; the others are independent games, listed for what they do well.

  1. 1. Huntaz Virtual Vacation

    Our pick: social vacation experience

Huntaz Virtual Vacation is the relaxed end of online vacation games. Vacations to real cities are scheduled throughout the day and last 30 minutes, an hour or two hours. You join a Travel Party of up to 10, explore the destination together with party voice and chat, and ask the travel guide a few short questions about where you are.

The playful part comes from Things to Do: shared 3D places where your avatars can try activities together, from jet skis at the beach and slides at the aqua park to timed ski runs, which are ranked just for fun. Places vary by destination. There are no chests, points or winners on a vacation, and taking part for long enough in a completed vacation earns a small Huntaz Coin reward.

    Kind of play
    Relaxed, social, no competition
    Cost
Free account; some activities cost Huntaz Coins
    Company
Travel Parties of up to 10, with voice and chat
    Platforms
Web browser on desktop and mobile

Good for: friends who want to spend time together somewhere new.

Worth knowing: it is about the experience, not winning. For competition, try Huntaz treasure hunts.

  2. 2. Huntaz treasure hunts

    Treasure hunting in real places

If your group wants a goal, Huntaz also has treasure hunts in real streets. You explore real locations, find hidden chests and collect Huntaz Points, solo or in a team. Modes range from quick solo runs to the Daily Hunt everyone plays and multiplayer team hunts. Our online treasure-hunting games guide explains how they work.

    Kind of play
Exploring with a goal, solo or in teams
    Cost
    Free account needed
    Company
Solo, or teams in multiplayer hunts
    Platforms
Web browser on desktop and mobile

Good for: explorers who like a clock and a target.

Worth knowing: each hunt has a time limit, so it is less leisurely than a vacation.

  3. 3. GeoGuessr

    Location guessing

GeoGuessr drops you into a real street-level scene and asks you to guess where in the world you are. Its free page lists the Daily Challenge, five locations refreshed every day, as free with a sign-up, while its other modes, including multiplayer duels and private party games, are included in a subscription.

    Kind of play
    Guess the location
    Cost
Daily Challenge free with sign-up; other modes by subscription
    Company
Solo free; multiplayer and party games by subscription
    Platforms
Web, iOS and Android; Steam on some plans

Good for: people who love recognising places from small clues.

Worth knowing: free play is mainly the Daily Challenge.

  4. 4. City Guesser

    City guessing on video

City Guesser, from the independent video travel site virtualvacation.us, plays a street-level video from a city and asks you to place your guess on a map. It has worldwide, regional and country modes, streak modes, timed and no-moving challenges and a multiplayer option. The site asks players to help keep it free with donations.

    Kind of play
    Guess the city from video
    Cost
    Free, supported by donations
    Company
    Solo or multiplayer
    Platforms
    Web browser

Good for: a relaxed guessing game with real city sounds.

Worth knowing: videos follow the camera, so you cannot wander off.

Huntaz Virtual Vacation

A vacation as a game night

A Huntaz vacation makes an easy game night. Pick a departure, form a Travel Party and share the invitation link with your group. In the Departure Lounge you can talk with party voice before you leave, and on the trip the Party Leader can take everyone to the travel guide’s Places to Go, or you can all explore freely.

When you want to play, open Things to Do and head for a shared 3D place together. Race down the ski slopes on timed runs, paint side by side in the studio or try the aqua park slides, where the destination offers them. Some activities are free and some cost Huntaz Coins. Afterwards, your party’s voice stays open for a short farewell, and each traveller keeps a private memory of the trip.

What to look for in an online vacation game

Before you settle on a game for your group, check a few things.

  • Real places: does it use real imagery of real places, or a fictional world?
  • Company: can your friends join the same game, and is voice or chat built in?
  • The kind of fun: relaxed exploring, guessing, or racing against the clock?
  • What is free: read the game’s own pricing or free-play page before you invite everyone.
  • Devices: does it run in a browser on both phones and computers, or does it need an app?
  • Age rules: some social games or areas have age limits. On Huntaz, the Virtual Nightclub is for travellers aged 18 and over only.

Ideas for playing with your group

Mix the games for a full evening.

  • Warm up with a guess: start with a round of a guessing game to see who knows the world best.
  • Travel together: join a Huntaz vacation and explore a real city with your Travel Party, chatting as you go.
  • Make your own challenges: on the trip, set mini-games such as “first to spot a red tram” or “find the oldest building”.
  • Finish with a race: if the group still has energy, switch to a Huntaz treasure hunt or our multiplayer geography games for a winner.
